Inuit Culture Day |
|
Posted by : mark on Friday, June 06, 2008 - 02:04 PM EST |
Thanks to the Inuit Staff at Ulluriaq, one of the biggest highlights of this school year was undoubtedly Inuit Culture Day. On a beautiful, sunny spring day in March, the entire school gathered in the forest to learn about and celebrate Inuit culture. The event was launched with Johnny George Annanack lighting a traditional soap stone oil lamp.
There were five tents set up in the trees just south of the community. In each of the tents Inuit Elders shared knowledge about sewing, tanning skins, cooking, music and other skills. Outside of the tents, students learned about dog sledding, seal hunting, how a traditional outdoor freezer worked—to name only a few. A traditional lunch comprised of only country food was shared with all those interested from the school and from the community.
Everyone in attendance learned something new, made new friends and had a completely wonderful experience. A very special thanks goes out to Mary Baron and her committee for organizing the entire event.

Imagine students teaching other students about physical and social healthy living. That is exactly what happened during our two day long Health Fair. It was a truly wonderful pedagogical experience—even K, 1, 2 students taught secondary students in Inuktitut. The presentations from each of the classes were informative and interactive. There were a variety of topics shared including, Traditional Medicines, Sexually Transmitted Blood Infections, The Skeleton, Healthy Eating, Dangers of Smoking, The Five Senses, to name a few.

Teacher VS Peewees Hockey |
|
Posted by : mark on Friday, June 06, 2008 - 01:23 PM EST |
The Teachers versus PeeWees Hockey Game is the longest standing sports competition between the staff and students at Ulluriaq School—for 10 years the teams have battled! 2008 would be the year that the PeeWees triumph. The Teachers fought hard and kept the game very close, but an overtime goal by Erik in overtime sealed the victory for the students. A big thanks to all the teachers and especially the Spirit Committee for making this event so successful.
