Fussball Tournament 2006 - Tournoi de soccer de table 2006 |

The week of Dec. 6th- Dec. 11th the Secondary sector had a "Welcome to Winter Fussball Tournament". 17 teams signed up from both French and English sector. They started the single elimination tournament on Monday and the championship was held on Monday, December 11th.
The 17th team, also known as "Team Agora", made up of the vice principal, Mark Brazeau, a closet-fussball enthusiast, and Gary Thibault, was available to play some of the eliminated teams. Team Agora was pretty excited to take a shot at the winners.
After the dust settled, the results were the following:
3rd place - Wayne and Richard
2nd place - Joe and Samuel
1st place - Noah and Matthew
Still undefeated - Team Agora!!
The fussball tables were purchased through New Paths in Education.
Les élèves du secondaire ont organisé un tournoi "Vive le soccer de table d’hiver" pendant la semaine du 6 au 11 décembre. 17 équipes ont participé au tournoi où le dernier match a eu lieu lundi le 11 décembre.
La 17e équipe, nommée "L’équipe agora", composée du directeur-adjoint Mark Brazeau et Gary Thibault, était disponible pour jouer avec des équipes qui étaient éliminées. L’équipe agora était heureuse de pouvoir jouer contre les gagnants.
Voici les résultats:

L’achat des tables de soccer a été subventionné par le programme Nouveaux sentiers.

Toundra au trot 06-07 - Tundra Trot 06/07 |

L’équipe de Toundra au Trot d’Ulluriaq a commencé à se préparer au début septembre, prenant 3 mois d’avance sur les coureurs de l’an dernier. Il y a deux fois plus de coureurs cette année pour un total de 12. L’équipe est composée de filles et de garçons de la 6e année jusqu’à secondaire 2. Si tout le monde continue leur entraînement, une équipe complète de trois garçons et de trois filles pourront participer à la course à Kuujjuaraapik au printemps! De plus, nous pourrions aussi être éligibles pour un prix d’école!!
Afin d’aider le programme d’entraînement des participants, l’équipe s’est procurée des poids pour faire un peu de musculation et développer leurs muscles. Le programme de Nouveaux sentiers a subventionné cet achat d’équipement qui améliorera sûrement l’endurance et la vitesse des coureurs dans un programme d’entraînement à long-terme.
Les élèves s’amusent en créant leurs propres défis entre eux. Deux garçons du secondaire qui sont presque aussi rapides que l’autre font une course à toutes les pratiques pour voir qui est le plus rapide. Comme effet, les deux garçons sont plus rapides qu’ils étaient en septembre!
Il y a aussi 3 élèves de la 7e année qui essaient d’accumuler plus de kilomètres que leurs pairs. Tout le monde avait couru 15 km quand une fille commence maintenant à tous les dépasser. C’est agréable de voir la concurrence amicale qui les aident à s’améliorer en temps et en distance à chaque semaine. À date, tout le monde semble s’amuser et nous nous préparons à des surprises à venir. Dans la nouvelle année, nous espérons rencontrer, par le biais de vidéoconférence, l’équipe championne de 2006 d’Inukjuaq. Reviens-nous voir pour des suivis dans la nouvelle année!
The Ulluriaq Tundra Trot Team started their practices in early September this year, getting a 3 month head start over last year's runners. The team had also doubled from around 6 regular runners last year to 12 regulars this year. Students range from Grade 6 to Secondary 2 and are an excellent mix of girls and boys. We will certainly be able to send a full team of three girls and three boys this year to the race in Kuujjuarapik and will be eligible for the school award if everyone continues their training.
To improve the training program this year, the team has purchased some weights and is doing a little bit of weight training to help their leg muscles become stronger. The weights were bought as a result of support from the "New Paths in Education" program. This new addition to the training regime will hopefully improve their endurance and speeds over their long term training plan.
The students have also created some little challenges among themselves and other runners on the team. There are two of the Secondary boys who are almost as fast as each other- every time we meet for running practice, they race to see who can be fastest on that day. As a result, they are spurring each other on and both guys are running faster than they did in September!
There are also three students from the Grade 7 class who are trying to get more kilometers than their friends. They were tied at 15 kilometers and now one of the girls is moving ahead. It is fun to see the healthy competition that is challenging them to improve their times and distances every week.
So, far everyone seems to be having fun and there are more surprises to come. In the new year we hope to meet the Inukjuak running team, who were the overall winners last year, using video conference technology. Stay tuned for updates in the new year!

Ulluriaq Walks for International AIDS Day! - L'école Ulluriaq marche pour la vie contre le SIDA! |

World AIDS Day was on December 1st. The school and citizens of Kangiqsuallujjuaq gathered in the Community Center to discuss the issue of AIDS in the North and around the world. Following the gathering, the group went outdoors. The participants aligned themselves to spell "qasapik" in Inuktitut syllabics—which means AIDS. Then we walked around the community. It was a chilly, windy day, but all of the participants endured and had fun.
Les élèves ainsi que les citoyens de Kangiqsualujjuaq se sont réunis au centre communautaire le premier décembre pour la journée mondiale de lutte contre le SIDA. Il y avait un discours au sujet du SIDA, qui affecte le nord ainsi que le monde entier. Par la suite, le groupe s’est réuni à l’extérieur où ils se sont placés afin de former le mot “qasapik” ce qui veut dire “le SIDA” en inuktitut. La température et le vent n’ont pas empêché tous les participants de “marcher pour la vie” dans la communauté pour souligner l’importance de cette journée.

Pour une troisième année, des élèves au primaire apprennent le chant de gorge et le tambour par le biais d’un cours virtuel. Ils rencontrent leur professeur, Karin Kettler, une fois par semaine lors d’une vidéo conférence. Karin est une chanteuse de gorge et joueuse de tambour expérimentée et elle enseigne à partir du Conseil national de recherche à Ottawa. Nos élèves sont fiers d’apprendre les mouvements traditionnels en rapport avec leur culture inuite, sous la surveillance d’Isabelle Guay. Des spectateurs d’ailleurs au Canada ainsi que d’un peu partout dans le monde ont assisté aux spectacles donnés par nos musiciens. Ce projet reçoit de la subvention du programme Nouveaux sentiers.
The Virtual Drumming and Throat Singing Project is continuing into its third year. Students in primary meet with their instructor, Karin Kettler, once per week through video conference. Karin is an experienced Inuit drum dancer and throat singer. Karin teaches out of the NRC in Ottawa. The students at Ulluriaq are supervised by Isabelle Guay. Our students take a lot of pride in learning traditional skills related to their Inuit Culture. Our group of drummers and singers have performed for different groups of people across Canada and all over the world. The Virtual Drumming and Throat Singing Project is a New Paths project.

Announcements : Track and Field Finals - Finale d'athlétisme |

Our students had their first introduction to Track and Field. There were a handful of events that girls and boys competed in. Teacher’s even participated in some of the events. It was a fun afternoon of serious competition.
Pour la première fois, nos élèves ont participé à différentes épreuves d’athlétisme. C’était un après-midi vivant avec des concurrents très impressionants! Même les enseignants ont pu s’amuser en démontrant leurs forces. Quelles performances!
