La visite de Erin - Erin visits Kangiqsualujjuaq |

Our students are continuing into their third year of learning to play piano through video conference. Their teacher, Erin Parkes, usually only gets to interact with her students through a satellite connection. This spring, however, Erin had a chance to visit Ulluriaq School and give some lessons in person. The students responded very well--they really enjoyed being able to see Erin in person. Parents of the students were invited to view the lessons. Erin also worked with some of the other groups in the school while she was here--she even helped a Secondary class to learn African drumming.
New Paths in Education funded Erin's visit to Kangiqsualujjuaq.

Indoor Tennis Tournament '07- Tournoi de tennis 2007 |

Du 20 au 22 mars 2007, se tenait la première édition du tournoi de mini-tennis de l’école Ulluriaq.
C’est plus de 40 jeunes nouveaux adeptes de cette discipline encore méconnue qui ont envahi les 3 mini-courts du gymnase.
Quelques semaines auparavant, tous les élèves du secondaire ont eu une introduction à cette activité dans le cadre de leur cour d’éducation physique. C’est donc sur une base volontaire que tous ces jeunes se sont inscrits à cette première édition. Il y avait 3 catégories: secondaire 1-2 masculin, secondaire 3-4-5 masculin et secondaire 1 à 5 féminin.
C’est Junior Emudluk qui s’est imposé devant Wayne Etok dans une finale endiablée chez les garçons sec. 1-2.
Chez les filles, c’est Eva Obed qui a eu raison de Shirley Annanack en grande final.
Du côté des garçons sec. 3-4-5 se fut une lutte jusqu’à la fin entre les deux finalistes. David Dan Annanack qui a dû donner tout ce qu’il avait pour remporter contre le coriace Noah Annanack.
Les élèves de l’école attendent déjà la prochaine édition avec impatience.

Match de football Profs-Élèves - Teachers vs Students Football Game |

Teachers and students got together for a friendly game of indoor flag football. The game was very close--both sides played a very tight game. In the end it was the students who triumphed and everyone had fun!

Crazy Hat Day 2007 - La journée de chapeaux fous ! |

Acting crazy is always enjoyable. Wearing your favourite hat is always lots of fun too. So imagine the great time we had on Crazy Hat Day! Teachers and students from all grades in the school wore their craziest hat for the entire day. Near the end of the day, we met in the gym for the judging of the crazy hats. Representatives from all sectors of the schools were selected for the final judging as they paraded around the gym. Winners received gift certificates from the local Northern Store.

Fête de Noël du secondaire - Secondary Christmas Party |

Le 19 décembre, les élèves du secteur anglais au secondaire ont débuté leur journée en se rencontrant à 8h45 pour une promenade de motoneige et des jeux dans la toundra. Les qamutiks étaient pleins et le sentier poudreux, mais la journée était bien réussie!! Suite à une hausse de température pendant la fin de semaine, plusieurs lacs étaient plus difficiles à traverser, alors la destination finale a été modifiée. Quelques groupes se sont trompés de chemin et ont grimpé une montagne vers Tasialuk au lieu de rester sur les sentiers bien tapés. Une fois arrivés et tous ensemble, les élèves ont participé à une course de raquettes sur un plan incliné, ont pris un bon chocolat chaud et ont joué au souque à la corde jusqu’à ce que la corde fende en plein milieu. Un défi de saut à la corde spontané a été lancé avec la corde coupée du jeu précédant. Jeremias a gagné en faisant 29 sauts, ce qui est plus difficile ce que l’on peut penser avec des bottes d’hiver dans la neige molle! Essayez-le!
De retour à l’école, tout le monde a gallafré dans un repas de spaghetti, macaroni, ragoût de boeuf, sandwichs aux oeufs, crudités, bâtonnets de poisson avec du gâteau et du jus pour terminer. Tout le monde a bien mangé et suite à un beau travail d’équipe pour faire le ménage de la cuisine et de l’agora, les élèves ont commencé à jouer à des jeux à l’intérieur avant de partir. Ils se sont amusés avec les chaises musicales, des jeux de musique et de chasse aux objets différents en terminant avec un concours de danse limbo. Joewillie était le dernier assis aux chaises musicales et Jerry et Wayne ont montré tout une danse dans le jeu de musique. Sans doute, tout le monde est parti avec beaucoup plus d’esprit de Noël dans leurs coeurs. Demain sera la dernière journée d’école avant un congé bien mérité. Joyeux Noël à tout le monde!
On December 19th, the Secondary English students met at 8:45 for a skidoo ride and games on the land. The qamoutiks were full and the trail was powdery but the day was a lot of fun and a huge success. The initial destination was changed when the lakes that we were planning on going to were still quite slushy from the short warm spell we had over the weekend. Then a few groups took a wrong turn climbing a mountain towards Tasialuk, instead of turning onto the well treed trails. When we finally all arrived, we had a snowshoe race up a steep incline, drank a tasty cup of hot chocolate and had a short lived tug of war, which ended in a "SNAP" as the teams broke the rope right in the middle. The broken rope ended up making an excellent skipping rope, which meant the start of an impromptu skipping challenge (Jeremias won with 29 skips, which is much harder than it sounds with heavy winter boots and soft snow underfoot! Try it, you'll see!)
Back to the school, where we indulged in a delicious feast of spaghetti, macaroni, beef stew, egg sandwiches, vegetables and dip, fish sticks, cake and juice. Everyone ate till there bellies were full and after a lot of team work to clean up the kitchen and agora we played a few more games inside before going home. First was musical chairs, then freeze game with music, another a "go-and-get" game, then finally a limbo contest. Joewillie was the last man sitting in the musical chairs game and we were treated to some awesome dancing by Jerry and Wayne in the freeze game. At the end of the afternoon, everyone had a little more Christmas cheer in their step as they went home. Tomorrow will be the end of school before a well deserved holidays! Merry Christmas everyone!
