Club d'informatique - French Computer Club
Posted by : Graziella on Tuesday, April 03, 2007 - 01:12 PM EST

The French Computer Club gets together for one hour every 2 weeks. French students from Grade 4 to Grade 7 are invited to come have fun with computers. The Club allows the primary French students to master their computer skills while communicating in French. This year, the students have made posters for their rooms and/or made holiday cards for Christmas, Valentine's Day and Easter. All the students have a First Class email account where they can write messages or receive links that take them to various internet sites that allow them to discover on-line games and activities in French. There is only one rule : Have fun in French!!!

Pique-nique printanier - Spring picnic
Posted by : Graziella on Tuesday, April 03, 2007 - 12:38 PM EST
SchoolNews As the weather begins to warm and the days become longer, students become anxious to be outdoors. We held our annual school picnic just before the Easter break. We gathered at together, made fires, ate lunch and played games. The sun was shining and kids were smiling. We held our annual Bare Foot Race as well. Joe Etok repeated as the boys champion and Gina Mae finished as the girls champion. A big thanks to the Spirit Committee who organized the event.

Blue Met Project
Posted by : Graziella on Tuesday, April 03, 2007 - 12:36 PM EST
The secondary 3, 4 and 5 students in English were quite privileged. With the help of Maïté de Hemptinne, coordinator of the Québec Roots project with Blue Metropolis in Montreal, an author, Monique Polak, and a professional photographer, Monique Dykstra, were invited to Kangiqsualujjuaq.

Monique Dykstra spent a full day and a half teaching the students different types of photography (landscape, portrait and journalism) and a few tips on how to shoot better pictures for our current book project. As a result of Monique’s patience, the students learned a great deal about many aspects of photography.

Then, we all had the chance to spend a full day out to go dog sledding with our guides, Daniel Annanack, Mark Brazeau and the I.P.L. students. Each team’s assignment was to shoot as many pictures as possible to produce a photo-journalism essay. Some students were quite adventurous and took gorgeous shots of the dogs pulling, our guides and students riding. Monique was sincerely impressed with the work our students did in photography.

Monique Polak spent a few half days helping the students write more effectively. She captured the students’ interests right away by sharing many different writing experiences and tips.

All three ladies had this special touch of making the students feel very proud of their work. This will be a truly unforgettable experience for our students. Luckily, some them will have found a new interest in writing and photography. I am really grateful to all who contributed in the success of this project.

Excursions en traîneau à chiens - Dog team excursions
Posted by : Graziella on Tuesday, April 03, 2007 - 12:34 PM EST
SchoolNews Once again this year, the IPL group and their teacher Daniel Annanack organized dog team excursions for all the students in primary. Leevan and Daniel mushed groups of students to Old Woman's Lake where they had a tent set up. The students made fires, ate lunch, jigged for trout and hunted ptarmigan. Students and teachers really enjoyed the excursions. The IPL boys did a super job at helping out and taking good care of the younger students--GREAT WORK!

Geo Week 2007 - La semaine de la géographie 2007
Posted by : Graziella on Tuesday, April 03, 2007 - 12:31 PM EST
Imagine having the chance to tour 18 different countries of the world without even having to step on a plane. Geo-week provided that opportunity to the staff and students at Ulluriaq. Each class chose a country that they wanted to study and present. They researched many aspects of their country—geography, music, food, clothes, festivals, climate, and many other interesting facts. Then each group transformed their classroom into that county with students becoming the expert instructors to the rest of the school.

It was a truly wonderful pedagogical experience. Students teaching other students—even Grade 1 and 2 students teaching secondary students in Inuktutut. The presentations and artwork were astounding. The students collaborated with one another in small and large groups. The teachers diligently oversaw then entire class from start to finish—their perseverance and creativity made the entire week possible. Special recognition goes out to the Geo-Week Committee for a job well done.

During the week of presentations, students carried their passports as they visited up to four different countries per day. Jean Leduc reflected on his experience during a day of touring:
This morning, I visited China, Venezuela and Japan. From one of Tokyo‘s busiest streets I penetrated into the quietness and the peace of a Japanese room and garden, complete with fountains, discreet Japanese music, exotic plants and trees and the tea ceremony. Then, I let myself be guided by the perfumes of oriental cuisine in the hallways and landed right in the heart of China. This particular Chinese street did not have enough room for all it’s busy occupants, or for the colorful menacing dragon making it’s way through the crowd. But, fortunately, I found a quiet corner to enjoy a bowl of noodles. A cup of Chinese tea and out to Venezuela...
