| It is a still a tradition in our village for children to get new parkas for Christmas. We now use sewing machines to make them, but we still use down to make them warm. We also put fur on the hood to protect our face from the cold wind. Traditionally Inuit parkas were made with no zipper and a pointy hood. Inuit say that the pointy hood was used to pull people out of the ice if they fell through. Here are some photos of our parkas: |
| Larry and Christy are both wearing a pull over parka with no zipper. Larry is ice fishing. Christy is showing her first fish - a lake trout! | |
| Ella and Susan have zippers on their parkas. Most parkas have trim around the wrist and the bottom. |

This is Debbie's parka. She is our teacher. She made
it with Maggie. Maggie sewed the parka and Debbie embroidered pictures
around the bottom.
